Activities

There are many places to go and activities, both on Carenero, and minutes away within the local vicinity. A short list includes:

Catamaran Sailing AdventuresSailing, wind surfing, sea kayaking, boating
All sorts of water sports are available. Catamaran Sailing Adventures provides day tours and sailing lessons by a licensed and experienced captain.
Fishing
Many opportunities available just within the town on Carenero.
Surfing
The northern tip of Carenero is one of the more challenging sites.
Snorkeling
As mentioned elsewhere, some of the most unspoiled reefs exist here.
Scuba diving
Very pristine waters with a paradise of unspoiled reefs. The scuba center is a 4 minute boat ride from the Buccaneer. When you arrange diving with them you can have them pick you up right at our dock. Also see Bocas Water Sports.
Tropical rain forest trekking
Both within the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park (the only marine park in Panama) and on Carenero itself.
TurtleWatching the Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, and Green Turtles
Additionally dolphin watching.
Sightseeing, including indian communities visitation
Many things to see, including local festivals.
Sun-bathing, swimming, and just walking on the beach
Relaxing on the beach, just outside the door of your Cabana or Suite.
Exploring the hundreds of islands of the Laguna de Chiriquí
Various tour circuits are available.

The brown boobies, king fishers, toucans, etc.
MacawsZapatilla Cays
These are a pair of island located within the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park.
Bastimentos Island National Marine Park
Ngöbe Indians reside throughout this region, including the park. The Nature Conservancy has a good article on this region.
The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute - Bocas Research Station
Located just north of Bocas, this opened in October 2003.

Local Events

Palo de Mayo
May 1st - Maypole dance performed by young girls in Bocas town and Bastimentos.
Dia de la Virgen del Carmen
July 3rd - Everyone in town makes a pilgrimage to La Gruta, the cave in the middle of the island, for a mass in honor of the Virgen del Carmen.
Feria Del Mar
September 11th - The "Fair of the sea" is a four-day festival held on Playa El Ismito, north of Bocas town. Photos from last year.
Fundacion de la Provincia de Bocas del Toro
November 16th - Celebrating the founding of the province in 1904, this day is celebrated with parades and other events.
Dia de Bastimentos
November 23rd - Bastimentos Day is celebrated with a parade and drums on Isla Bastimentos.

The Visit Panama IPAT site has a couple of nice short advertisement MPEG videos on Bocas del Toro, and Chiriquí, and of course a lot of information in general. The Institute for Spanish Language Studies has short descriptions of several more places, such as the hidden shrine in a cave in one of the small towns on Colón Island.
